I worked for berlitz in one of the bigger language centers in Tokyo. I worked there for about a year and I’m pretty happy I’m done with them. I hope you didn’t accept the 60/50 contract that makes you teach 10 lessons five days a week. They introduced that after I worked there for about half a year. Teaching that much with only five minute breaks in between is so draining and mind numbing it’s crazy. Plus, since berlitz has to guarantee you 10 lessons they usually take them away from more experienced teachers that therefore would cost them more money. The company has been steadily declining in quality regarding not only employment but also what is offered to students. Their teaching material is a joke. They actually know that they are doing bad compared to other schools as was always posted in messages from the CEO but ofcourse that’s the teachers fault and therefore nobody ever gets raises. My recommendation is that you should get your visa and get out. Your time is worth more.
I applied to another Eikaiwa (Berlitz) and started there in October of 2019, where the majority of senior teachers were paid more and worked less, and we Full-Time Instructors were given 8-10 lessons a day every day. Then covid came and I learnt a valuable lesson; job security is an illusion. My contract (along with several other members of staff) was not renewed because the company wanted to save money. The union, of which I was part, didn’t want to fight for me, and I was forced to look for a new job elsewhere.
